Every once in a while I get the bug to shoot a personal project. Something that I can do for myself, and push my photography in ways that I don’t always get to. Lately, I’ve been really interested in developing my commercial portfolio more and I’ve had tons of ideas of images that I would love to make. Luckily, I met Lindsey at the first San Diego Photography Shoot-Out. I was lucky enough to be a leader at that shootout, worked with Lindsey and instantly liked her presence, confidence in front of the camera and awareness of what looks good and what works. That night I struck up a conversation with Lindsey and explained that I had been wanted to create a complete model portfolio for a single model. After talking for a couple months about ideas, we settled on starting with headshots. It made sense especially since she had never had a true headshot for her current portfolio, I also felt that the headshot we chose for the portfolio would help influence both the direction to go with future images, and inform how we could diversify the looks throughout her portfolio to show both her range as a model as well as mine as a photographer.
Makeup artist Heather Weisman came out to collaborate with us on this project and did a fantabulous job on the looks we created. We had hoped to create three separate looks for the first shoot together, but time ran short as the second look took a long time to create. Heather having never worked with me before wasn’t sure how much leeway (complete!) I was giving her when I said ‘go for it’ for the second look. Ultimately though, the collaboration worked and she made a great look. If we get to work together again, I would still love to create the third look, but may end up using it for product, or jewelry work as opposed to just a headshot.
Below are a handful of the images we created that first night working together. Lindsey and I are already planning our ‘fitness’ shoot which I will also post here. For the fitness shoot I’m looking for a ridgeline that Lindsey can be running along at sunrise/sunset with mountains and sky in the background. I’ve noticed a lot of beautiful yellow flowers cropping up all over Southern California lately, so I’m hoping to get out there soon to shoot! If anyone has ideas/suggestions of beautiful ridgelines not far from San Diego, we’d love to hear em!
As expected Lindsey was amazing to work with and I believe we got a headshot for her out of this shoot, in fact, she’s already had a call for a shoot with a Southern California clothing company based on the new headshots! I’m so excited about this project and the collaboration, but we have a limited time to get the rest of the photo shoots together since Lindsey leaves for Nepal over the summer, and I would love to have a strong start to the portfolio before she leaves. Keep your eyes out for more work on this project!
Thanks again to Lindsey and Heather for being such amazing people to work with!
