I was sitting in my local Starbucks, enjoying a french press and typing out my thoughts for the blog post for Jenna and Duncan’s fantastic afternoon wedding at the Catamaran Resort in San Diego’s Mission Bay when “California Dreaming” came on the radio. It took me a minute to tune into it, but then I smile at the irony. You see, while Jenna grew up in sunny San Diego, she and Duncan live in Denver, Colorado now. So for her and Duncan as well as many of their out of town friends and family members this was more of a destination wedding than a local wedding. For this reason the Catamaran Resort was a perfect setting to host not only their ceremony and reception, but many of their guests as well. It’s a beautiful resort at the top of Mission Bay, between Mission Beach and Pacific Beach as well as close to downtown San Diego and everything America’s Finest City has to offer. [continued below]

Since Jenna and Duncan chose to do a first look and family portraits before the ceremony, I arrived early to see Jenna and her girls as they were getting ready. My good friend and photographer Kevin met me shortly after I arrived to head over to meet Duncan and his groomsmen who were also getting dressed and ready at the Catamaran. We quickly picked a location that would be away from most guests for their first look.
Catherine Bachelier Smith of CBS Weddings was Jenna and Duncan’s event designer and it was my first opportunity to work with her. Now, I’ve known of, and was fortunate enough to get to know Catherine personally serving on the board of directors for San Diego’s Wish Upon A Wedding, but this was the first opportunity we’ve had to work together on a wedding. I already loved here as a person, but fell in love all over again when she came to me as we were supposed to be lining up for the ceremony to ask if I could keep everyone back for another fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes more with Jenna and Duncan shooting portraits!? Yes Please!!!!! I don’t remember the last time I not only was given extra time for portraits, but had a bride that smiled and was so obviously happy as Jenna.
The ceremony on the lawn overlooking Mission Bay continued the awesomeness of the early part of the morning and Jenna’s Uncle performed the ceremony with a beautiful, personalized wedding ceremony including his recollection of the first time he held Jenna in the hospital shortly after she was born. Following the der ceremony, guests stayed on the lawn for cocktail hour before heading into the ballroom for lunch and dancing. Now, often times, afternoon weddings are not dance fests, but this was my second wedding in a row where people hardly left the dance floor. At one moment Jenna’s mother came up and put her arm around me saying”did I tell you this was a dancing crowd or what!” I had totally forgotten that she had told me that when we had met nearly a year ago.
Needless to say, this was a fantastic wedding and Jenna and Duncan as well as their families were so great to work with. I loved having the opportunity to shoot at the Catamaran resort again as well as to work with Catherine and their Wedding Cinematographer, Joe Park.
Jenna and Duncan, thank you so much for entrusting your wedding day memories to me. I had such a good time spending the day with you both!
